What is the ligamentum flavum?
The ligamentum flavum is a band of elastic connective tissue found in the spine that connects individual vertebrae to one another. It is one of the so-called ligaments of the back and plays an important role in the stability and movement of the spine.
Structure and position in the body
The ligamentum flavum runs like a narrow strip from one vertebral arch to the next, all the way along the full length of the spine. Its yellowish colour is particularly striking, caused by a high proportion of elastic fibres. This elasticity allows the band to stretch and contract again during movement without tearing.
Looking at a cross-section, the ligamentum flavum sits at the back of the spinal canal. There, it forms a kind of protective layer between the individual vertebrae and the spinal cord, which runs through the inside of the spine.
Function of the ligamentum flavum
The band carries out several tasks at the same time. On one hand, it provides stability by holding the vertebral arches closely together. On the other hand, its elasticity allows the spine to bend forwards and backwards, or straighten up again, without individual vertebrae slipping against one another.
Another important point: the ligamentum flavum helps to immediately "close" the spinal canal again after bending. This protects the spinal cord during movement and reduces the load on the intervertebral discs.
Importance in medicine
In medical reports, the term ligamentum flavum often appears when the spine is being examined, for example in MRI findings or X-rays. The band plays a role particularly in cases of back pain, herniated discs, or changes in the lumbar spine region.
With increasing age, the ligamentum flavum can become thicker or less elastic. In some cases, this creates increased pressure on the spinal cord or on nerves that run through the spinal canal. Doctors sometimes refer to this as "hypertrophy" or "thickening" of the ligamentum flavum.
When does the ligamentum flavum become a concern?
Normally, the band causes no problems and carries out its tasks without being noticed. It is only when it changes in an unhealthy way, for example through wear and tear, inflammation, or age-related processes, that problems can arise. Typical symptoms include back pain, a pulling sensation in the legs, or even numbness when nerves become compressed.
In such cases, the ligamentum flavum is examined more closely, usually with the help of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to find the cause of the symptoms.
A brief summary
The ligamentum flavum is an elastic band between the vertebral arches of the spine. It provides stability, mobility, and protection for the spinal cord. In medical findings, the term appears mainly when changes to the band are detected, for example thickening that can affect the nerves.
Under normal circumstances, the ligamentum flavum carries out its tasks quietly and is an important part of the spine's complex support system.
