Fatty degeneration: causes and consequences

Fatty degeneration: causes and consequences

PD Dr. med. Witold Polanski

What is fatty degeneration?

Fatty degeneration describes a process in which healthy cells in organs are damaged by fat deposits. This change often affects the liver, but it can also occur in other organs such as the heart, the kidneys, or the muscles. When cells store fat, they lose their normal function, which leads to a decline in how well the organ works. It is a bit like a sponge that absorbs oil instead of water and can no longer do its original job.

Causes and risk factors of fatty degeneration

Several factors can lead to fatty degeneration. A common cause is excessive alcohol consumption, which puts a great strain on the liver. But obesity, an unhealthy diet high in saturated fats, and lack of exercise also play a role. Metabolic conditions such as diabetes increase the risk as well, because they can disrupt the way the body processes fat. In some cases, a genetic predisposition can mean that some people are more prone to this type of cell change.

Symptoms and possible consequences

In the early stages, fatty degeneration often causes no noticeable symptoms. It is only when organ function becomes more seriously affected that problems appear. With a fatty liver, for example, those affected may feel a sense of pressure in the upper right abdomen. Tiredness, general discomfort, and difficulty concentrating are also common signs. If the degeneration progresses, it can lead to serious conditions such as liver cirrhosis or heart problems. In advanced stages, the organs are often no longer able to carry out their tasks, which can lead to life-threatening complications.

Diagnosis and examination methods

Several tests are needed to identify fatty degeneration. Blood tests can give early signs of raised liver values or disrupted fat metabolism markers. An ultrasound scan of the liver shows whether fat has built up. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI scan may be needed to assess the extent of the changes more precisely. A liver biopsy, in which a small tissue sample is taken, can provide further clarity, especially if advanced damage is suspected.

Treatment and therapeutic approaches

Treatment for fatty degeneration depends on the cause and the severity of the condition. One of the most important steps is changing lifestyle habits. A balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains can help to reduce fat deposits. Regular physical activity supports the metabolism and encourages fat breakdown. Where degeneration is caused by alcohol, it is essential to stop drinking alcohol completely. In some cases, medication may be needed to regulate fat metabolism or to treat related conditions such as diabetes. The aim of treatment is to stabilise organ function and prevent further damage.

Prevention through a healthy lifestyle

Prevention is the key to avoiding fatty degeneration. A healthy diet and regular exercise are essential to reduce the risk. It is advisable to cut down on saturated fats and to choose plant-based oils instead. Alcohol should only be consumed in moderation to protect the liver. For those with existing metabolic conditions, it is important to attend regular medical check-ups and to follow treatment recommendations. By living mindfully, the health of the organs can be maintained in the long term and the risk of fatty degeneration significantly reduced.
