When needed, such as after a fatty meal, the gallbladder contracts and passes bile through the ductus cysticus. In the other direction, freshly produced bile from the liver travels through the main bile duct and the ductus cysticus into the gallbladder, where it is stored temporarily.

The ductus cysticus is particularly relevant in certain conditions, such as gallstones or inflammation of the gallbladder. If a stone becomes lodged in the ductus cysticus, it can cause a painful build-up of pressure. During operations on the gallbladder, such as its removal (cholecystectomy), it is important to know the exact path of the ductus cysticus in order to avoid complications. The term therefore appears frequently in medical reports, findings, and surgical notes.
