Ascending aorta: what your report means

Ascending aorta: what your report means

PD Dr. med. Witold Polanski

The ascending aorta is the upward section of the main artery that starts directly from the heart and carries oxygen-rich blood into the body's circulation.

Where is the ascending aorta in the body?

In the human body, the main artery, known medically as the aorta, begins at the heart. The first section, which points upwards, is called the ascending aorta. This part is roughly five to six centimetres long and runs inside the chest, directly behind the breastbone. The ascending aorta connects the left ventricle of the heart to the next section of the aorta, known as the aortic arch.

This section is especially important because it receives the freshly oxygenated blood from the heart and carries it forward. From here, smaller branches called the coronary arteries also supply the heart itself with blood.

What does the ascending aorta do?

The main job of the ascending aorta is to pass on the blood pumped out by the heart. It forms the starting point of the main circulation, which supplies all organs and tissues with oxygen and nutrients. Without this section of the aorta, blood would not reach the body in sufficient amounts or with enough pressure.

The coronary arteries also branch off from the ascending aorta. These supply the heart with the oxygen it needs to keep pumping.

When does the term appear in medical reports or letters?

The term ascending aorta often appears in medical reports when imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI have been carried out. Reports commonly describe whether this section of the aorta looks normal or whether changes have been found, such as a widening (aneurysm), a narrowing, or deposits.

In most cases, the term simply describes a completely normal part of the body's anatomy, with no illness present. It only becomes medically significant when an abnormality is specifically mentioned.

What does it mean when changes to the ascending aorta are mentioned?

If a medical letter refers to a "dilated" (widened) or "calcified" ascending aorta, this can point to certain conditions. This often refers to an aortic aneurysm, which is a bulge in the wall of the blood vessel, or to arteriosclerosis, where calcium and fat build up inside the vessel wall.

Whether such a change is dangerous and needs treatment always depends on the exact diagnosis, the extent of the change, and the individual situation. In many cases, the finding is first monitored and checked regularly.

Why is the ascending aorta so important?

This section of the main artery is under particular strain because it sits directly after the heart and is exposed to high pressure with every heartbeat. Changes in this area can therefore potentially have serious consequences if left untreated. However, this is only relevant if an actual condition has been diagnosed. With a normal, unremarkable ascending aorta, there is no cause for concern.

In summary

The ascending aorta is a completely natural part of the circulatory system and describes the upward section of the main artery immediately after the heart. In most cases, it is simply an anatomical term, with no illness involved. Only when an abnormality is mentioned in a report can it become medically significant. In that case, a detailed conversation with a doctor is a good idea.
